The the first and best tip we can give is- "Be prepared". If you want to start your own flock, there are a few things to consider

Weather you plan to hatch or buy chicks you will need to be familair with brooding (keeping chicks warm and safe) so be sure to check out that link on the left.

If you are buying young hens or pullets you will still need to be prepared with proper shelter, feed, feeders and waterers.
